Ankle Sprains

San Antonio Foot Doctor

An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments of the ankle joint are stretched or torn. This type of injury leaves the bone unharmed, but can leave the joint bruised, swollen and unstable. Ankle sprains are treated differently depending on their degrees of severity.

Sprains are divided into three categories:

  • First Degree: Ligaments are stretched, not torn. Stiffness, swelling and pain are typically mild and mobility is slightly limited.
  • Second Degree: Ligaments are partially torn in this degree. There is moderate stiffness, swelling and pain, mobility is difficult and the joint is somewhat unstable.
  • Third Degree: Ligaments are completely torn, making this the worst type of ankle sprain. Stiffness, swelling and pain are severe, making mobility almost impossible without assistance. The joint is also very unstable.

First and second degree sprains can be treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation, but third degree sprains require corrective surgery. Hill Country Foot Surgeons can diagnose your sprain and perform surgery if needed.
